Japan is full of contrasts. The contrasts of modern cities, teeming full of life and tranquil temples with pristine scenery are striking. This juxtaposition between old and modern, rural and urban, is what makes Japan so unique. Japan is a country with centuries-old tradition and cutting-edge technologies. Japan has something to offer everyone, from the bright lights of Tokyo up to the mountains covered in snow of Hokkaido. We have previously featured the beautiful work of David Lazar Travel Photography. In this article we want to extend our coverage and showcase some of the pictures he took in Japan. In addition, we asked David Lazar about his photography, gear and vision. Below is the full interview.
David Lazar Interview
What was the inspiration for these images of Japan?
Japan has a culture that is unique. It allows me to capture images I could never take anywhere else. Every season brings something new to the country. Japan is a country that has everything: people, culture, landscapes, wildlife.
How did you create these images of Japan?
Comparatively to other countries in South East Asia, it is more difficult to find models in Japan for people or culture-style photo shoots. A local fixer/guide can help you find people to contact and meet. A guide who has contacts within the geisha community is essential for organizing a meeting.
What camera, lens and lighting equipment was used to capture the images of Japan?
I used the Nikon D800 body and Nikon 24-70mm & Nikon 28-300mm lens. No flashes, reflectors or other artificial light was used to take the photos.
Could you describe your creative process for creating images that are as impactful and powerful?
Consider the entire scene, not only the object you are shooting. It is important to consider the entire scene when taking a shot. It’s also important to wake up and be out early to capture the best light in the early morning. This will help you avoid crowds, as well. It is important to find a location that will inspire you. The concept of the photo often depends on your background and scene. With the right subject and the location, creative ideas should form.
What’s next? What’s next?
I’m currently working on editing my new Vietnam pictures from a recent trip. Next, I will be leading a Bali photo tour this September and then guiding another Japan winter workshop in January.
