As a man of principles, I have remained in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict and its occupation. This is my city, the place where I grew up, lived my youth and gained my knowledge and skills. The fact that I was able to contribute here became apparent. In March, after I’d loaded all the sandbags required to protect the city, the opportunity for journalism arose. While I was traveling around the city and its surrounding areas, I also wrote articles. During that period, the city underwent a great deal of change. During that time, the familiar places and habits took on a sinister look. Sandbags and anti-tank hedgehogs replaced concrete checkpoints. The monuments were transformed into parallelepipeds and cubes. It was impossible for me to ignore the events, so I chose to take pictures of Kyiv’s famous tourist attractions through my own perspective. After that, I started shooting with my camera. Sometimes this happened during an air raid or siren alert. I set out to do more than just record and report events. I selected a camera that shoots in black and white, as well as in infrared. I could intensify the mood in the city. I then transferred the photos to watercolor paper using gold-leaf transfer paper.

Why did you take these photos?

During the conflict between Russia and Ukraine I spent my entire time in Kyiv. It is my hometown. This is where I was born. My favourite, most recognisable locations were changing. There are now checkpoints as well as anti-tank Hedgehogs. It was terrifying. It was frightening. To show how a beautiful city can change, I created a little art project. The changes are not for the better.

Would you share your process of creating an image as powerful as this?

“I am an artist, so I did things my way. Originally, the photos were taken using a Canon EOS Rebel XSI. Most popular lens. Infra-red filter was used to create a unique black-and white image. After printing the images on special transfer paper, I glued them to the back of watercolour papers. After that, I added gold leaf on the watercolour paper. Then I used gloss varnish to transfer the image. The result was 20 artworks.

What’s next? What’s next?

“At the moment, I am working on photographs of people I photographed in locations that have been devastated by war. Using my signature technique. “
